  • 5 Things We Should Teach our Kids About Laundry

  • 5 Things We Should Teach our Kids About Laundry

Did you feel a bit lost when it came to doing your own laundry? We have come up with 5 things to teach your kids about doing the laundry so they feel confident when the time comes for them to make it on their own. You may think you have a while yet but if you're preparing yourself for sending your child into the world on their own, either to university or if they are just planning to take the step to live on their own, it pays to be prepared. By teaching your children these simple steps to laundry now they will have plenty of time to perfect their skills before they venture into the unknown.

    1. Inspection & Stain Removal

Stains can be easily missed during a quick wash, so teaching your children the art of inspecting clothes for stains is a very important step. By teaching your children about the importance of using stain removal products you will be saving them, and no doubt yourself, a lot of money. The Dr. Beckmann Stain Devils Survival Kit could mean that your child will never have to throw away clothes because they are stained. This simple kit contains 3 of the most popular Stain Devils meaning by having this little kit in their cupboard they can remove over 40 of the toughest stains in just 3 minutes, the time it takes to make a cup of tea. The kit even comes with a handy fridge magnet to tell them which Stain Devil to use for their stain, so never again need your child be confused about stain removal.

    2. The importance of sorting

To keep colours from bleeding and ruining clothing, the general rule is to sort lights from darks, colours from whites. Explain the potential hazards of mixing new fabrics with old, red fabric with lights and then introduce them to the wonder that is Dr. Beckmann Colour & Dirt Collector. A product that will save even the best of us from colour runs caused by those unwanted garments that find their way into our wash and more commonly mixed colour washes, whilst also collecting all the stray dirt. These ingenious sheets mean that your child wont have to wait till they have a full wash load of one colour or waste water by doing small loads of washing, these sheets mean they can wash mixed colours with confidence.

    3. Laundry boosters

As well as teaching your children to add products such as fabric softeners to their laundry its a good idea to teach them about adding whiteners to keep their whites looking like new for longer. Adding laundry boosters such as Dr. Beckmann Glowhite, can help their whites stay white and also restore whiteness to clothes that have gone that inevitable grey colour. To keep clothes white whilst also removing stains Dr. Beckmann Whitener with Stain Remover is the ideal product.

    4. Fixing Colour Runs

Colour run is something every laundress will have to deal with at some point and by teaching your children that it does not necessarily spell the end for their favourite dress or t. shirt you can save them a lot of disappointment. Dr. Beckmann Colour Run Remover can help rescue clothes from unwanted dye runs, for example if the red from a red and white striped t. shirt runs and they now have a red and pink striped t. shirt, or that naughty black sock invades the white wash and turns everything grey. This product is available for colours, whites and as a hand-wash meaning they are covered whatever their colour run crisis.

    5. Timing and temperature

There are a lot of dials, buttons and options to choose, making the washing machine look a lot like a NASA space shuttle to a teenager or someone who has never had to do their own laundry before, and if you’re not a seasoned laundress with years of experience, it may be overwhelming. Make sure you use your expert knowledge and know how to install confidence into your children that they're making the right selections even for delicates and woolens. When it comes to using the tumble dryer it is also a good idea to introduce them to drying sheets, these products keep your clothes feeling soft and makes them easy to iron, meaning if your child is about to rush out of the door to a party or important job interview they don't need to worry about how long the ironing will take them. By teaching your children these 5 simple steps you are building a foundation of life skills alongside those such as table manners. You can feel confident that your child is equipped with the knowledge of how to carry out, what can sometimes be, a daunting task . However if you're not quite ready to shut down the 'Mums Hotline' just yet then may be leave a step out, ensuring your darling son or daughter will always have something to consult your expert knowledge on.

  • How can I stop my whites looking grey?

When you first buy white clothes they will always be crisp and white. This is because the fabric is usually coated with optical brighteners. As you wash your garments these will wash off over time and leave your clothes looking dull and grey. To stop this from happening, and to treat clothes that are looking grey, you can use Dr. Beckmann’s Glowhite. You simply pop one of the Glowhite sachets into the back of your machine drum on top of your white laundry and then add your usual detergent as normal and wash. We recommend that you use Glowhite with all your white washes. Its unique formula adds optical brighteners to your clothes to restore that “as new” brightness.

  • Top 10 tips for stain removal

    1. Treat stains as soon as possible – fresh stains are always easier to remove as they have not yet set into the fabric. Dealing with marks immediately also guarantees that you remember what the stain was so you’ll be better prepared to treat it!
    2. Be wary of using hot water, as heat can often “set” a stain.
    3. Pre-soak dirty items overnight before treating spot stains.
    4. Do not soak wool or silk; instead use a specialist ph neutral detergent to protect the delicate fibres.
    5. Always treat a stain from the wrong side of the fabric.
    6. Never rub - always dab. This is to stop stains from spreading and to also reduce the risk of fibre damage.
    7. Always work inwards to the middle of the stain to avoid spreading the mark further. Alternatively, place a clean cloth under the stain and work the stain and stain remover onto the cloth underneath.
    8. Always pre-test a stain remover for colourfastness as a faded area on a garment is as unsightly as a stained area!
    9. Always check wash care label instructions as some fabrics are not suitable for stain removers which contain enzymes.
    10. For those really tricky stains, Dr. Beckmann Stain Devils range is just what the laundry doctor ordered. With six Stain Devils in the range; cooking oil & fat; curry & sauce; grease, lubricant & paint; tea, red wine, fruit & juice; ballpoint ink, felt-tip & mud and grass & make-up, there is a Stain Devil for every possible smudge, spillage or mark which might crop up.

  • How do I know if my washing machine needs cleaning?

  • How do I know if my washing machine needs cleaning?

    There are a number of signs that your washing machine needs to be cleaned;

    1. Unpleasant odour - the odour is caused by mould which is caused by bacteria in the washing machine. Mould can be carried on your clothes, bedding and towels even after they have been washed, and can lead to respiratory problems.
    2. Black, slimy residue - This can be found in and around the door seal as well as inside the drum. The residue or soap scum is the build up of washing detergents and fabric softeners that stays in the washing machine and does not get rinsed away. The build up can start to come away from the drum and the door and find its way back onto your clothes leaving dirty black marks.
    3. Black spots on clothing - The black spots on clothing can be down to either the soap scum left in your machine or if you live in a hard water area it could be down to limescale. Limescale builds up on the pipes and elements of your washing machine and can cause breakdowns, which will result in expensive call out and repair charges.
Dr. Beckmann Service-it and Service-it Deep Clean Washing Machine Cleaners work as a system to make sure your machine is not just clean but hygienically clean.

  • Top Tips for Selling your Home

  • Top Tips for Selling your Home

Are you thinking about putting your house on the market? Or maybe you’ve had your house up for sale for some time now and are wondering what you can do improve your chances. With the housing market in the state that it is at the moment we thought it would be a good idea to bring you some useful tips to help your home stand out. Just follow these simple steps to improve the viewing experience for potential buyers...

    Curb appeal...

Curb appeal is all about first impressions, how do other people view your home from the outside? Is the front of your house doing what you want it to? Make sure window frames and doors are clean and give them a fresh lick of paint if they are  wooden. Also make sure there are no weeds if you have a garden area, no dead pot plants and no tatty door mats. If your house is full of immaculate clean lines make sure the front of your home reflects this, keep it simple and low maintenance. If you are trying to give off the feel of a country cottage, even in the middle of a city, make sure you have well looked after flower pots or window boxes. Finally take a walk across the road from your house and look at it as if you were a passerby. Is the front of your home doing what you want it to do? Don’t under estimate the power of first impressions and kerb appeal really does count.

    Get a second opinion...

Get a friend or neighbour to come and take a look around your home as if they were looking to buy. Then get them to advise you on what they like and don’t like about the property. This is the best way of getting the perspective of potential buyers as you are too emotionally attached to your own home to be impartial.

To decorate or not to decorate...

You don’t have to completely re-decorate when you want to sell your home but it would be a good idea to freshen up any painted walls that you have. It gives the impression of a well looked after home that people have loved living in so much they have taken the time to look after it. If you do have any room that have particularly garish colours or wallpapers it might be a good idea to paint over them with a neutral colour so that people see the room first rather than the colour of its walls.

    Let there be light...

Simply by updating your light fittings you can create a whole new atmosphere in a room. By replacing out of date light fixtures with adjustable halogen lights you can use them to highlight different areas and potentially make the room seem larger. It also gives the room a much cleaner look rather than having dusty light shades hanging from your ceiling. Another good lighting tip that will help make your room seem light and airy is removing heavy dark curtains and drapes. By swapping your curtains for light fabrics you can let more natural light in to the room making windows appear larger and lift the general mood of the room. If you already have delicate fabrics dressing your windows why not try freshening them up with Dr. Beckmann Dry Clean Only sheets. These sheets are ideal for removing small spot stains and making fabrics smell clean and fresh in just 20minutes in the tumble drier.

    Change is good...

Don’t be afraid to change the floor plan of a room. By moving furniture around you could find you can create multi-purpose rooms. This is a great idea if you live in a 2 bedroom house but would like to create the option of a third. If you find that once you begin moving furniture around that there are stains on the carpets that you forgot were there, have a go with Dr. Beckmann Carpet Stain Remover. It is perfect for pet stains with its brush head attachment that gets right to the heart of the stain. If you find the stain has been there so long not even Dr. Beckmann can help, a strategically placed plant works just as well.

Make the most of what you've got...

If you have wooden or natural stone/ tile flooring you want to show them off at their best. Natural flooring can be a big selling point of a home, especially in period properties, so it is important their natural beauty can be seen clearly by potential buyers. Dr. Beckmann’s great range of floor cleaners has a bio-protect formula inspired by nature, designed to give all wooden, parquet, stone, tile and laminate floors a natural shine.

Out of sight, out of mind...

Another essential tip is to de-clutter and de-personalise your home. As you will (hopefully) be packing up all of your things to move anyway this is a good way of making light work of the packing duties. As much as you love your Royal Doulton figurines they might not be every viewer’s cup of tea so it is a good idea to pack ornaments and sentimental things out of sight. You want people to be paying attention to your home and not the things in it. The same goes for family portraits and posters on the kid’s bedroom walls. You want to give a feeling of space and let people imagine where they could put their prized possessions. This step can often be the hardest but if you think about it as it is not forever and you are simply packing them away so that they are safe and ready to go to their new home, it can make the process a lot easier. Also make sure you have plenty of storage for kids toys. Toys are one thing that it very difficult to remove as children with them so often, if there are things that have not been played with for sometime and take up a lot of space try to move them out of the way. If this is not possible having good storage is the answer, something that is big enough to hold all the toys and still shut so that they are not over flowing but not so big that it takes over the room. If your viewers have children they probably wont mind seeing a few toys neatly put away in a child's bedroom, but if they do not have children it can be very off putting and distracting to see toys around.

    Keep it clean and tidy...

You want to make your home feel inviting and hygienic at the same time, so making sure your sofas and soft furnishings are looking clean and plump is very important. Dr. Beckmann Stain Devils Survival Kit is great for any washable fabrics such as cushion covers; the handy kit removes over 40 of the toughest stains from felt tip pen to baby food. Make sure you have fresh, ironed bedding on all beds, if you use fake tan or you have a daughter who uses fake tan Dr. Beckmann Fake Tan Stain Remover is a great product for getting rid of all those unsightly stains left by fake tan. Concentrate on the biggest selling areas, the kitchen and the bathroom. Make sure there are no nasty smells coming from your washing machine with Dr. Beckmann Service-it and Service-it Deep Clean, this two tier system tackles both the dirt you can see and the dirt you can’t see leaving your machine hygienically clean and smelling fresh. Spruce up your taps by polishing them with a solution of vinegar and water, this will make your taps sparkle like new whilst the vinegar also kills bacteria. Another way to make people feel comfortable in your home is to make sure it is a good temperature, if you have not had your heating on for a while, providing the weather is not too hot, put it on an hour or so prior to the viewing. The last thing you want is your perspective buyers to walk into your home and feel cold. At the same time you do not want it to be too hot as all they'll want to do is get round your home as fast as possible so they can out of the heat.

    From the outside in...

The garden has now become more than just an outdoor space for the kids to play; it is now seen as an extra room. People want to see how they can use the garden for relaxing and entertaining and that it is also child friendly if they have children or grandchildren. So make sure you utilise your garden to its full potential. If you have a snug little area surrounded by blossom trees at the bottom of your garden put some nice chairs in it and create a relaxing environment for reading a book. If you have decking that is perfect for barbeques and summer evenings with friends then make sure your decking is looking its best. Dr. Beckmann has a number of products that work outside of the home as well as inside, Dr. Beckmann Hardwood and Parquet Floor Cleaner can make decking look revived, giving a great first impression to anyone entering your garden areas. Whereas Dr. Beckmann Power Cleaner is perfect for cleaning all kinds of things from window frames to barbeques to kids play equipment.

    Timing is everything...

According to research the best time to sell your home is between February and June. This is a time when the garden is blooming, the evenings are lighter making for better evening viewings, and most importantly there are the most potential buyers on the look out for new homes. In the summer months the market tends to go very quite, especially if it is a family home you are selling. With the kids off school people have less time on their hands to view properties, also families will be planning for starting school in September and many people are unlikely to move to a different area once their children have been accepted into their chosen school. Winter is a very quiet time of year and some advisors would actively discourage selling your home at the back end of December, for obvious reasons. However, it only takes one person to sell your home so in reality you could sell at anytime.

    Over to you...

You need to create the full experience of living in your home. You want perspective buyers to get an instant feeling of what it would be like living in your home and how it would feel to pull up into the drive way after a hard day at work. Keep your drive or the front of your house free from cars to leave space for the viewers to park their car. You want them to feel like you have put in the effort to make them feel welcome and by following these easy steps you will have come some way to making your home feel inviting and appealing. After that it’s over to you...

  • What makes my washing machine dirty?

  • What makes my washing machine dirty?

You may mistakenly believe that your washing machine must be clean as water is constantly passing through it. This however is not the case as things such as detergent, food and bacteria can all build up in your machine. Over time detergent and fabric softener can build up inside your washing machine causing what is commonly known as soap scum. This means that any food that may have been stuck on your clothing and then released into the wash can sometimes stick to the slimy soap scum and stay in your machine. Over time the soap scum can start to loosen, which means the left over food remnants are then released into the water and can find their way back on to your clothes. Low temperature washing can play a big part in the cleanliness of your washing machine, washing at low temperatures does not kill bacteria and therefore live bacteria can also build up inside your machine. In one load of underwear there could be up to 100 million E.coli bacteria in your machine. If you wash at temperatures below 60º bacteria is not killed and can be left in your machine to later infect other wash loads. Bacteria can then be carried around on clothing, bedding and towels and may cause illness, especially in the more vulnerable age groups such as the elderly and young children who's immune systems are not as strong. It is the bacteria in your washing machine that also causes the mold to build up and the nasty odours, mold is particularly dangerous for those who suffer from respiratory illnesses such as asthma. Another problem is limescale, if you live in a hard water area limescale can build up in your washing machine and on the pipes and elements, which means that your machine is vulnerable to breakdowns. Signs to look out for are a white chalky residue on the drum of your machine or around other things such as taps and also black or white marks on your clothing when they come out of the machine. You can prevent limescale by using a water softening product or a descaling product to remove the build up. Dr. Beckmann Service-it and Service-it Deep Clean are the only washing machine cleaning products that when used as a system tackle all of the things that make your washing machine dirty. The two products work to eliminate both the dirt you can see and the dirt you can't leaving your machine free from limescale, smelling fresh and hygienically clean.
