The UK’s dirty little secret - Friday, April 1st, 2011

Brit women wash clothes more than they do themselves.

  • Leeds ladies have the heaviest laundry
  • 63% of women wash clothes at least once a day
  • But only 22% of men wash more than once a week

British women spend more time washing clothes than they do washing themselves, a new national study has revealed.

The survey, of 1,492 adults across the UK, shows that the most heavy duty washer is likey to be a 40 year old women, living in Leeds, putting on an overwhelming 17 loads of washing a week.

And that Yorkshire lasses will do at least 2.5 wash loads (taking approximately two hours) every single day.

A staggering 63% of UK women claim that, on average, they put on at least one washing cycle each day. This is in comparison to regular male washers; only 22% of men do more than two wash loads each week.

The majority of Brit females (72%) spend less time washing themselves - just one shower a day, taking 14 minutes as an average across the nation. And the men are even less keen on their own hygiene - with the majority (64%) taking an average of just four showers a week.

The study by Dr. Beckmann, the laundry specialist, has revealed that despite the rise of the independent man, women are still the main clothes washer in the UK.

Dr. Beckmann spokesperson Susan Fermor commented:

According to our survey , 21st century washing is one of the most demanding of all household chores.

New technology is being developed all the time to make this task easier - we have recently seen the new washing machine with the 12 minute cycle but, laundry still dominates the household chores list.

Our obsession wit our appearance means that clean clothes are of the utmost importance - the importance of laundry cannot be ignored! Even at the expense of washing ourselves, it seems.

Women living in Leeds do the most washing, and in contrast to their southern counterparts, women in Southampton do the least amount of washing. Hampshire females het the easiest washing schedule, with only two washes per week on average.

Bland Brits only wear three colours - Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Britain is a nation hung up on bore-drobes instead of wardrobes.

  • Brits wear just three main colours in their lifetime
  • 54% of men and women avoid ever wearing bright colours
  • The Midlands is the most colourful region of the UK

Hot off the heels of London fashion week and its predictions for bright prints and florals, boring Brits wear just three colours on a day-to-day basis, a new national study has revealed.

The survey of 2,378 Brits, by laundry experts Dr. Beckmann has revealed that despite multicolours and floral prints emerging as the major trends for next season, 63% of Brits do not venture out of their clothes comfort zone, basing our entire bore-drobe around three drab colours - black, white and grey.

Both males and females are equally affected by a lack of colour, with over half of those surveyed (54%) revealing that they totally avoid wearing bright coloured or patterened garments. Two thirds (62%) of men questioned admitted to owning a bright or patterened tie, worn to spruce up bland shirt and suit choices.

The most unpopular colours to wear are mustard (34%) and orange (29%), along with neon brights (23%) such as lime green and hot pink.

Younger people expressed a preference for less colourful items, with 82% of the under 40s age group admitting that they rarely ventured outside of their 'safe' colours, with patterns hardly worn at all.

The most colourful region of the UK is the midlands, with those surveyed reporting the widest array of wardrobe colours on average; whereas respondents from Wales and the South West admitted that they have on average the smallest range of colours in their wardrobe.

Laura Unsworth from Dr. Beckmann, believes there is no excuse for bland wardrobe choices:

She said:

Our survey shows that Brits are less that adventurous when choosing their clothes - we are a nation of bores! With all the colourful fashion available on the shelves, there are just no excuses for any bland outfit ensembles!

From the survey, top tactics for sprucing up plain colours include wearing bright scarves, and accessorising with chunky jewellery, and 60% of those surveyed admitted to wearing brighter colours on their annual holiday trips.

SOS!!! ‘Save our socks’ - Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Britain is a nation of losers when it comes to missing socks in the laundry.

  • Brits lose 15 socks in the wash every year.
  • Lost socks in the wash cost the average UK household £240 every year.

The average UK household loses 60 socks in its washing every year, a new national study has revealed.

Those mysterious disappearances are no longer just folklore and actually cost each family a whopping £240 a year.

The national survey of 1,500 Brits, by laundry experts Dr. Beckmann has revealed that missing socks are most likely to affect the male members of the household, and that northern homes are top of the list as the most likely victims of sock disappearances, with 67% of households reporting that they lose up to 15 socks a year.

Homes in Newcastle reported the highest rate of loss (15 socks a year), with other northern locations Liverpool (13), Manchester (10) and Leeds (9) joining them in the top five.

Laura Unsworth, from Dr. Beckmann believes the 'lost sock' phenomenon is no longer just an urban myth.

She said:

The majority of people living in the UK have fallen victim to lost socks whilst doing their laundry. This phenomenon has long been an affliction of regular washers - these research findings will surely resonate with everybody who has pulled a single sock out of the washer drum.

Where the socks go is one of life's great mysteries - clearly this is causing some distress and a great deal of inconvenience to Britain's washing population!

Black socks are the most likely candidates to go missing, with a staggering 78% of people complaining that these are the most difficult sock colour to pair up after a washing cycle.

Young men aged between 14 to 25 are at a higher risk of suffering from missing socks and 82% of this age group admit to wearing odd socks on a weekly basis as a result. Conversely, females in the same age bracket (14-25) are most likely to be able to keep track of their pairs - only 21% said that they regularly lost a sock in the wash cycle each week.

Dirty Dreamers – Pyjamas are the dirtiest clothes in Britain - Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Pyjamas are officially the dirtiest clothes in Britain, a new survey has revealed.

According to a poll by laundry experts Dr. Beckmann, a staggering 52% of Brits wash their pyjamas only once a fortnight, with 10% admitting they only wash their bed clothes once a month.

The results also exposed women as the dirtier of the sexes - with 59% of females ages between 18-25 confessing they only wash their PJ's every two weeks, compared to only 23% of their male counterparts admitting the same.

Dr. Beckmann can also reveal the grubbiest bed clothes belong to Mancunians as a whopping 54% wash their pyjamas only once a month. The freshest bedclothes belong to Londoners, with 42% claiming they wash their sleepwear three times a week.

According to top psychologist Donna Dawson, people have a strong emotional attachment to their pyjamas, just like they do with their beds. Donna explains:

Our pyjamas represent a retreat from a tiring day, an escape into the world of rest and relaxation, as well as confort, cosiness, warmth, and psychological security.

Adding out individual 'scent' to them just makes them more a part of us. Although we may rationalise that our pyjamas are not dirty because we do little in them apart from sleeping, on a subconscious level we are avoiding washing them in order to prolong the smell signature which makes our pyjamas like a second, safe skin to climb into.

A women’s work is never done….until 10.30pm - Friday, October 8th, 2010

British women are working later than ever to keep up with their domestic duties, a new national study has revealed.

The survey, of 1080 working women across the UK, shows that with extra work and family commitments most women in Britain are forced to play catch up with domestic duties and are having to start their daily chores later than ever before.

An overwhelming 67% of women claim that it's usually around 8.30pm before their hectic schedule allows them to start domestic chores like loading the washing machine.

The majority of working British women (53%) don't finish their daily household chores until 10.30pm at night, according to the study by laundry experts Dr. Beckmann with one in 10 admitting that they are busy with family cleaning and washing until past 11.00pm most nights.

That means they spend the majority of their out-of-work time washing and cleaning, leaving women little 'me' time to socialise of catch up on family news.

Dr. Beckmann spokesman Steven Simpson said:

According to our survey, a 21st century woman's work really is never done. Women in the UK are constantly on the go, maybe more busy once they have left the workplace.

While the men of the house find it easy to relax once the evening family meal is out of the way, and the children can choose to watch TV or go out to play with their friends once they have completed their homework, the average woman of the house has another two of three hours of domestic duties to perform - such as washing, vacuuming and general tidying up.

With number of women holding down 9-5 jobs increasing every decade they have less and less extra-curricular time to complete household tasks and, despite the fact that men are doing more around the house than previously, the majority of domestic duties are still completed by women.

Women living in Newcastle perform more domestic duties than their counterparts across the UK. Geordie females spend an average of 3.2 hours completing household tasks every day. But London ladies get the easiest household chores schedule with less than half as much time on domestic duties - just 1.3 hours a day.

“The UK’s going nude” reveals Dr. Beckmann - Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Women are shunning fancy, colourful and sexy underwear in favour of simple nude coloured lingerie, a recent survey has revealed.

According to a poll by laundry experts Dr. Beckmann, 72% of women now opt for nude or flesh toned lingerie when shopping - shunning the classic white and black briefs or fancy lacey sets.

It seems celebrities may be responsible for the change in the nation's taste in lingerie - with hollywood siren Eva Mendes revealing recently that she feels most sexy in "either nude or very basic underwear" and pop starlet Katy Perry choosing a simple nude bra and knickers above sexy lace to wear on the front of Rolling Stones magazine.

According to psychologist Donna Dawson, this shift is women's lingerie inclination is significant as the colour of a women's bra reveals much more than it covers up. Donna Dawson explains:

Colours at the 'warm' end of the spectrum (red, orange, yellow), create feelings of excitement and vitality, and can actually raise your blood pressure, heartbeat and breathing rate.

So what does this mean for the nude lingerie trend followers?

Donna explains:

A nude or flesh-coloured bra denotes a personality that is natural, easy-going, down-to-earth and transparent. This women is relaxed, with nothing to hide.

If you've not converted to nude tones yet, you may be interested in what your favourite colour of lingerie reveals about you.

A Third of men wear underpants for three days before washing - Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

A third of British men (34%) wear their underpants for an astonishing three days before washing them, a new survey has revealed.

The study, by Dr. Beckmann Colour & Dirt Collector, also reveals that brit blokes own an average of 10 pairs of undies, but generally rotate between four or five favourite pairs.

Grey is 76% of Brit men's favourite colour of underwear because it's the easiest to wash without ruining and, according to the 2,080 men polled, grey underpants look new for longer than white or black - the second and third favourites.

The worst culprits for wearing undies the longest are those aged between 18 - 25. They make up almost 90% of the blokes who go three days without changing their pants.

This phenomenon has been dubbed the 'Mum Effect' because most of the blokes in the 18-25 age range still live at home and expect their mother to make sure there are clean underpants in their smalls drawer daily. If there aren't, they just continue to wear the same pair, the survey reveals.

Only 35% or British men admit to wearing clean underpants every day - the majority of those are aged 40 and above. Three out of ten males aged between 18 - 50 change their underwear at least every two days. But a sobering 34% admit they regularly wear their boxers for three days before changing them.

Even more shocking is that 10 per cent of those who wait three days to change their underpants also admit that they have even turned their favourite pants inside out to prolong time between washes.

Dr. Beckmann spokesman Steven Simpson said:

Clearly, wearing your underwear for three days before changing them isn't something that anyone should encourage.

The fact that so many men are doing it is what makes this revelation so shocking. It is likely more to do with laziness that it is with any other explanation. It's a phenomenon we would definately discourage.

It's a shame that men prefer grey underwear purely as it's the least likely to get ruined. Men could wear coloured boxers if they used Colour & Dirt Collector product as it traps all the stray dirt and colout in every wash so garments stay nice and bright.
